The Seven Principles of Ocean Literacy

This project at EightyOne was to support the United Nations in their efforts to better understand and care for our Ocean.

In partnership with Steve Menzies at Flinch, we based a series of videos on the Seven Principles of Ocean Literacy. These helped launch the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, which runs from 2021 to 2030.

Principle 2: The Ocean and life in the Ocean shape the features of the earth

Principle 3: The Ocean is a major influence on weather and climate

Principle 4: The Ocean makes the earth habitable

Principle 5: The Ocean supports a great diversity of life and ecosystems

Principle 6: The Ocean and humans are inextricably interconnected

Principle 7: The Ocean is largely unexplored

The Ocean is of course incredibly complex, our challenge was to distil each video into a single minded, inspiring narrative. We did this with the help of seven of the world's leading ocean science advocates, from legendary oceanographer Sylvia Earle, to billionaire and philanthropist Ray Dalio.
